For attracting birds to one’s backyard, nothing is as simple and effective as adding a good old-fashioned birdbath.
Birds need to have daily access to water year-round to both drink and bathe in and having a backyard birdbath is a quick and easy way to help bring in more birds to view and enjoy.
But just like setting out a bird feeder, getting the birds to find the birdbath can sometimes be a challenge.
Location is a critical part in getting birds to find the birdbath in a backyard and placing it near cover, such as a bush or tree will greatly help the birds in finding the water on their own.
But there is something we can do to help birds find the birdbath in the yard when it seems to go unused.
Birds are highly attracted to the sight and sound of moving water and by adding a solar fountain pump to your birdbath, the noise and movement of the water can indeed help attract birds to the birdbath.
Birds have great eyesight so it doesn’t take much movement to catch their eye.
The solar pump will toss up a small geyser of water in the middle of the birdbath, giving a bit of sight and sound to the moving water.
Another way to add moving water to the backyard, one we have done for several years now actually, is a 3-tiered water fountain.
The trickling water cascading down the tiers seems to be a magnet for birds, especially during the hot summer months as they come to not only drink but also bathe in the moving water.
The 3-tiered water fountain is my favorite way to add moving water to the backyard as it not only attracts birds but adds a nice décor as well as a soothing sound of trickling water to the garden as well.
The fountain, however, does need a direct power supply so that is one consideration to keep in mind with regards to location as where the solar pump is self-sufficient from the sun’s rays and can be used anywhere in the yard it gets sunlight.
We find cleaning the fountain is a constant chore, however, as just letting it go will cause the bird droppings to eventually plug up the pump, but with routine cleaning, we have had great success with our fountains over the past couple of years.
If you are having a hard time getting birds to come to the backyard, try adding a birdbath with a solar pump or a 3-tiered water fountain.
The moving water should help in attracting birds to the backyard, especially if you can place it near a bush or tree.
